The Inglis family are still involved in the day to day running of this business, with both Jamie and Arthur Inglis, within the firm.
Managing Director Mark Webster brings an extensive knowledge of print and digital media to the firm, having held a senior position with News Limited for the past eight years.
A History of Excellence
William Inglis & Son Ltd is a family owned company that commenced operations in 1867 selling farm produce. Soon after the company expanded into selling a wide range of livestock, horses, vehicles and other machinery at a number of sites throughout Sydney, the most notable being the auction house situated on Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD.
The bloodstock operation commenced in 1906 in rented premises known as Newmarket at Randwick. In 1917 William Inglis & Son purchased Newmarket for 50,000 pounds.
Developed and upgraded over the years, the world renowned Newmarket site is headquarters for William Inglis & Son today, and boasts a first class sales arena with seating for over 1000 people, plus four stable complexes accommodating up to 600 horses.
Set on 11 acres of landscaped gardens, just 6km from the Sydney CBD and 10km from the Kingsford Smith International Airport, Newmarket represents a unique blending of history, with all the convenience of modern day practicality.
Thoroughbred Auctions Newmarket Complex, Sydney
William Inglis & Son Ltd stages a busy schedule of thoroughbred auctions during the year, covering all aspects of the breeding and racing industry, from weanlings and yearlings, through to broodmares, stallions and tried racehorses.
The Australian Easter Yearling Sale, conducted at Newmarket every Easter, is the flagship event on the Inglis calendar, attracting the finest young thoroughbreds in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as buyers from all over Australia and throughout the world. It is the barometer for all thoroughbred interests in Australasia and has become an integral part of the Australian horse racing culture.
While Easter is undeniably the high point of the year for William Inglis & Son, it is just the high-profile elite end of the market. The William Inglis Yearling Sale Series comprises five (Easter, Premier, Classic, Autumn and Scone) specific yearling sales designed to cater to every level of the bloodstock industry in Australasia.
Newmarket in Sydney plays host to the Easter and Classic Sales, while Oaklands, the Victorian base of William Inglis & Son, stages the Premier and Autumn Yearling Sales. The Scone Yearling Sale conducted in May is the most successful country sale in Australia.
Oaklands Complex, Melbourne
The company's expansion into the progressive Victorian market in January of 1994 has added new dimensions - with the establishment of an annual calendar of Inglis bloodstock sales.
The Oaklands complex is approximately 30km north of the Melbourne CBD on 100 acres of land on which the company has refurbished, upgraded and built seven stable blocks accommodating over 600 horses, as well having a world class indoor sales auditorium.
The success of the Super Vobis Scheme in Victoria (Owner and Breeder Incentive Scheme) has contributed to the depth of the racing industry and has added greatly to the appeal of Victorian bred horses sold at Oaklands.
Champions of the Turf
William Inglis & Son Ltd have played a vital role in Australian racing history, with many of the nation's finest thoroughbreds passing through the Newmarket sale ring.
Champions of all shapes and sizes, not to mention countless Derby, Oaks and Melbourne Cup winners have all paraded beneath the world famous fig tree. Heroic, Amounis, Flight, Hallmark, Evening Peal, and Wenona Girl?..right through to modern day stars such as Naturalism, Schillaci, Shogun Lodge, Universal Prince, Fairy King Prawn and of course, the great Might and Power.
The Sydney Turf Club's Golden Slipper Stakes, a Group One event for two year olds first run in 1957, has had a profound influence on Australian racing. More than any other single race, it has shaped and inspired our breeding industry with many of it's winners going on to achieve great success at stud.
Golden Slipper winners have a long and happy association with William Inglis & Son Ltd. Some 19 past winners have emerged from our yearling sales including champion sires Luskin Star, Marscay, Rory's Jester and Flying Spur and more recently Miss Finland and Forensics can be added to that extensive list.

Livestock
The Livestock division of Inglis has been conducting auctions at our Camden Saleyard complex for over 70 years. Run by experienced in-house Inglis auctioneers with extensive livestock expertise, the schedule of sales includes a weekly auction of mostly fat cattle, regularly yarding 500-850 and a monthly special store cattle sale. Weekly sales are also held for pigs and calves with general horse auctions held
bi-monthly.
Property
Residential / Small Acreage / Broadacre Property Sales
Inglis has been selling local country holdings in the Macarthur region of NSW since the 1950s. Leveraging off the Livestock division, Inglis has since developed a thriving residential and small acreage property sales business that services the Macarthur, Southern Highlands and Southern regions of NSW.
A successful team of real estate sales executives, marketing and support personnel are based at the impressive Inglis Property office in the main street of Camden.
