Gold Bullion will attempt to add the Group 1 Queensland Derby to his name on Saturday at Eagle Farm for Newgate Farm and connections.

Gai's Tip Sheet

SATURDAY 1ST JUNE – ROSEHILLRail Position: RAIL - +3m EntireOZ EMPRESS (Race 6, 1.55pm, 1200m, W Costin, 58.5kg)Oz Empress could never get into the race first-up at Scone. She was rushed off her feet over 1100 metres against quality opposition, and she also didn't enjoy the smoothest of runs in transit. She’s taken plenty of benefit from the outing though, and she strips fitter and tighter in condition ahead of this intended start. She drops slightly in grade to Benchmark 78 company, albeit against older mares but she's nearly four herself now so it doesn't make as much of a difference at this time of year. The step up in trip to 1200 metres will be of great benefit, and whilst it remains short of her optimum distance we expect her to get into a better rhythm in the middle stages of the race as a result. Winona knows her well having won on her in Listed company at Caulfield last preparation and will be positive from barrier 9 to try and take luck out of the equation. We expect to see a much-improved display second-up, and if she puts her best foot forward she should be challenging at the finish.SIR LUCAN (Race 7, 2.30pm, 2000m, W Costin, 56.5kg)Sir Lucan ran a terrific race in his last start at Newcastle where he was heartbreakingly pipped in the shadows of the post to be denied a much-deserved victory. He’s come through the run in wonderful order though, and he appears to have taken plenty of confidence from his tenacious display. He has toned up further ahead of this third-up run, and he was clear of the field after 2000 metres in his last start so we don’t foresee the drop back in trip being an issue. Winona will be positive from his ideal draw in barrier 1 to get him rolling along into a forward position where he can get into a good rhythm. As you would expect this is another competitive race, but he desperately deserves to get back into the Winner's Circle and he’s in terrific order so we hope to see him passing the post in first place for you all. SATURDAY 1st JUNE – EAGLE FARM Rail Position: RAIL - TrueGOLDMAN (Race 3, 12.53pm, 2400m, R Bayliss, 57kg)It’s a measure of Goldman’s ability and the high regard in which we hold him that we were slightly disappointed with his most recent outing at Newcastle in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup. To his credit he stuck on gamely to finish fourth, and perhaps his first-up effort in very testing ground conditions had left more of a mark than it had initially appeared. He’s come through that outing in good shape though, and the three weeks between runs has enabled us to freshen him up nicely ahead of this contest. He’s been to the beach regularly where he thoroughly enjoys stretching his legs in the ocean and having a roll in the sand and he’s bouncing out of his skin as a result. He’s settled into our base at Eagle Farm extremely well since his arrival, and he looks terrific. We expect him to relish the step up in trip to 2400 metres third-up, and Regan will be positive from barrier 8 to get him into a position where he can travel comfortably on or just in behind the speed. We've put the blinkers on to try and eke out some extra improvement, and whilst it's a very competitive race we expect him to be challenging at the finish.KNIGHTS ORDER (Race 3, 12.53pm, 2400m, A Hyeronimus, 59.5kg)We were disappointed with Knights Order’s finishing effort at Doomben, but there were excuses for his below par effort on that occasion and we feel that you can put a line through that performance. We know he’s looking for further, so he will relish the step up in distance to 2400 metres here third-up and he’s won at Eagle Farm previously so we know that he enjoys the course. He’s loving his time in Queensland and his coat is really starting to blossom in the winter sunshine. Barrier 15 is a bit tricky, so Adam will be positive from here to try and get across into a more favourable inside position. Hopefully the longer race means there's a bit less competition for the lead than last time, but Adam will ultimately settle him where he's able to get into a comfortable rhythm. This is a very competitive race, but he's ready to peak third-up over a suitable distance and we hope to see him roll back the years and be fighting out the finish.CONVERGE (Race 4, 1.28pm, 1800m, T Clark, 56kg)Converge could never get into the contest first-up at Scone and it was a frustrating race to watch. He travelled with plenty of enthusiasm throughout but had no room in the straight to get into the race, so you can be forgiving of his effort. He’s come through that run in good shape though, and we feel that he is in need of further at this stage in his career. As such, we expect the rise in distance to 1800 metres to bring about improvement and the slightly steadier tempo of the race over this trip should enable him to get into a better rhythm. He’s settled into our base at Eagle Farm extremely well since his arrival, and he looks super. He’s won a Group 1 at this track previously so we know he likes it here, and he's getting older now so this interstate travel and change of scene could be what he needs to bring back the spark he had earlier in his career. On his best form he's more than capable of winning a race like this, so hopefully he gets into a good position and enjoys a smooth run in transit and can show us all that he's still capable of winning at this level. ZOUMON (Race 4, 1.28pm, 1800m, R King, 56.5kg)Zoumon is in great shape ahead of his first-up run. We were very pleased with his improved trial at Randwick last time when stepping out in distance to 1200 metres, and he kept finding down the straight to finish strongly through the line. His two trials this time in have given him a good level of conditioning for the 1800 metres first-up, but he is resuming against race fit horses so he is slightly vulnerable in that regard and we do expect him to take plenty of improvement from the run. He’s settled into our base at Eagle Farm extremely well and has been enjoying the warmer climate since his arrival. Rachel knows him inside out and will be positive from barrier 9 to get him rolling along into a position where he can get into a nice flowing rhythm. There looks to be a fair amount of speed in the race, so he might have to settle a pair or two back in the run but we'll leave that to Rachel. He looks terrific at this stage in his campaign, and he's a wonderfully consistent horse with a brilliant winning record so whilst we expect him to improve as he stretches out over further he is sharp enough to do himself justice here. SUNDAY 2ND JUNE – SANDOWNRail Position: RAIL - True Entire Circuit SURPRISE VALLEY (Race 7, 3.55pm, 1300m, J McNeil, 56kg)Surprise Valley is in fantastic shape ahead of her return. She has a super first-up record having won twice when fresh, and she's more robust than in previous preparations so she looks well at the outset of this campaign. We are extremely pleased with the progress she has made in her two trials this time in, and they have given her a good fitness foundation from which to launch her preparation. 1300 metres is a lovely starting point for her, and she concluded last preparation with a fast finishing effort over course and distance so we know the expansive circuit at Sandown suits her. Jye will be positive from barrier 6 to try and get her into a position where she can travel comfortably, but we expect her to make her own luck on or near the speed. She's taking on the boys and some older, more seasoned campaigners in this contest which is never easy, but the track and trip will play to her strengths. She has a good record with two wins from three starts so far in her career, and whilst there's improvement to come she's forward enough to do herself justice on her return.
