JOHN COATES APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF INGLIS

William Inglis & Son’s managing director Mark Webster today announced the appointment of Mr John Coates AC as Chairman of William Inglis & Son Ltd, commenting, “The board of Inglis are thrilled to have secured the services of such a distinguished and experienced sports administrator and businessman. John Coates is President of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (since 1991) and a Member of the International Olympic Committee (since 2001) and its Juridical, TV Rights and New Media and 2012 London Games Coordination Commissions.

John will be Chef de Mission of the 2008 Australian Olympic Team in Beijing having held the same position in Athens, Sydney, Atlanta, Barcelona and Seoul and other senior team positions in Los Angeles, Moscow and Montreal. He was Senior Vice President of the Sydney Organising Committee for the 2000 Olympic Games and Vice President of the Sydney Olympic Bid Committee.

He is a Council Member of the International Rowing Federation (FISA), a Vice President of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport, a former Chairman of The Carbine Club of NSW, a former President of the Australian Rowing Council and former Deputy Chairman of the Australian Institute of Sport and Sports Commission.

John is a partner of Kemp Strang Lawyers, Deputy Chairman of David Jones Limited, Member of the Grant Samuel Advisory Board, Director of Grosvenor Group Limited’s Australian subsidiaries, Member of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and Director of Events New South Wales Pty Limited.

John became a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 1989 for service to rowing and was appointed an Officer (AO) in 1995 for service to the advancement of sport and the Olympic Movement. He was awarded the Olympic Order in Gold at the Closing Ceremony of the Sydney Olympics and the FISA Medal of Honour during those Games. He was also awarded a Centenary Medal in 2003. In 2006 he was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC) “for service to the development of sport nationally and internationally through the Olympic movement promoting the well being of youth and values of tolerance, understanding, peace and mutual respect between peoples of the world”.

Mr Coates will commence his term as Chairman on Monday December 17.
