Mentality Caps Classic Weekend For Inglis Graduates

27th Sep 2008

The early season Group 1 charge of Inglis graduates continued when Mentality returned to his best form in taking today's George Main Stakes.

The win gives Inglis graduates three of the first four Group 1 races run in Australia this season and capped a great weekend, as Mentality was ably supported by a number of highly promising Classic graduates.

The Group 1 winners – Typhoon Zed (Classic), Weekend Hussler (Premier) and Mentality (Easter) – are from each of Inglis' major yearling sales, for which there have been 4000 entries received for 2009.

MENTALITY ($100,000 2005 Easter, 5g Flying Spur-Synaesthesia) is now the winner of three G1 races over the Randwick mile and his earnings are just a tick short of the $2million mark.

The son of Flying Spur's versatility is underlined by the fact his big wins have come at two, three and five years of age, while he was also a Group 2 winner as a four-year-old last season.

A Redoute's Choice three-quarter-brother to Mentality is among the stellar nominations for next year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

While Mentality is already a multiple winner at the highest level, the promising Mark Kavanagh trained WHOBEGOTYOU (P$17,500 2007 Classic, 3g Street Cry-Temple Of Peace) indicated he too is capable of Group 1 success when romping away with the G2 Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

After two luckless runs earlier this campaign, jockey Michael Rodd ensured there wouldn't be a three-peat when allowing the gelding to stride forward from the 800m mark.

From that point, Whobegotyou quickly picked up the leaders before running away in the straight to win the 1600m event by almost four lengths and only marginally outside the course record.

He was promptly promoted to the head of betting charts for both the G1 Caulfield Guineas and G1 Victoria Derby after the stunning performance.

The value buying to be had at the Classic Sale was again in evidence at Randwick today when SARA'S CHOICE ($25,000 2007 Classic, 3f Choisir-Momentous Ride) broke her maiden status in style when winning the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m).

The filly completed a Randwick stakes double for Choisir – a $55,000 Classic graduate himself – following the earlier success of highly promising colt Dreamscape.

Earlier, FAULCONBRIDGE ($90,000 2006 Classic, 4g Peintre Celebre-Bringing Joy) booked himself a shot at better races when making it four from four this preparation and five from seven overall in winning over 2000m.

The Gai Waterhouse trained stayer is now likely to join fellow Classic graduate Lorne Dancer in the search for better quality staying features in the coming weeks.

The next Inglis Sale is the Melbourne 2 & 3YO Breeze Up Sale at Oaklands on October 26.
